A new dashboard combines engagement data to better support PhD students. The University Data Warehouse team processed data from Canvas (learning platform), Handshake (career platform), and the Student Information System (SIS) to create an integrated view of the information, then used Power BI as the visualization tool. The OPTIONS PowerBI dashboard summarizes student engagement with the OPTIONS Program, a curriculum-based career readiness and education initiative required for 7 partner PhD programs (400+ doctoral scholars) across the School of Medicine (SOM), Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) and Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS). The dashboard provides real-time insights into which resources scholars are utilizing, as well as who is actively participating in programming.
Marta Sliwa, Assistant Director, Doctoral Life Design in the Doctoral Life Design Studio, says, “This is an extremely effective tool, allowing the Program Director and partner program coordinators to track scholars’ progress, identify gaps, and ensure they are on track to fulfill program requirements. These real-time updates also make it easier to tailor career awareness education and support at scale, improving the overall effectiveness and impact of the program by aligning resources with individual scholars’ needs.”
