Adult emergency departments across the Johns Hopkins Health System now have access to self-registration, allowing patients to fill out registration information, confirm insurance, and sign forms after being triaged. The feature is available for all patients via text if they opt in during arrival to receive updates about their Emergency Department visit. Patients use their smartphones to self-register through MyChart. Patients do not need to be enrolled in MyChart to use this feature. The feature is completely optional and will only be sent after a patient is seen by a triage nurse to ensure care is not impacted and to comply with regulations. As more patients use self-registration, registrars may have more time to focus on more complex work and meet with more patients.
Health IT led this project beginning in fall 2023, and all the hospitals were live with this functionality by spring 2024. Health IT team members worked with clinicians, the registration team, the legal team, and Patient Advisory Councils throughout the project to ensure all team and patient feedback were incorporated.
