After a multi-year deliberate investment and effort from an entire IT@JH village to build and vet the research environment, IT@JH Research IT has reached a new milestone: the research environment they offer is now compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication (NIST SP) 800-171 information security standard. Compliance with NIST SP 800-171 offers Johns Hopkins researchers additional assurances of sensitive information protection that are often required for grant-funded research projects.

This implementation is part of the strategic initiative to strengthen Research IT infrastructure and support investigators in conducting a broader range of projects. The IT@JH Research IT environment is also approved at the institutional level by the Johns Hopkins Office of the Chief Information Security Officer to meet the requirement of NIH Security Best Practices for Controlled-Access Data and Repositories, including implementation of the updated data management and access practices under the genomic data sharing policy, and other regulated research requiring this level of information security standard.
