Up until recently, the transfer of people who die in the hospital (decedents) from their hospital rooms to the morgue and/or other locations for autopsy was tracked manually on paper and in Excel spreadsheets. Health IT teams have now made it possible to use tools within Epic to track this movement and related morgue storage. An Epic record for each decedent, built on the specimen collection and label printing framework, is available with a new label format. These labels feature scannable barcode for easy tracking. The benefits of this new process include:

  • Improved family-centered care
  • Reduction in safety events
  • Elimination of transcribed data and double documentation
  • Reduced paper documentation
  • Standardized decedent management
  • Improved documentation of decedent movement within hospitals and between hospitals for autopsy requests
