Starting October 15, 2026, one‑on‑one and small group Teams chats will be retained for 90 days to align with Office of General Counsel recommendations and industry best practices for managing business communications that are not official records. Teams meeting transcriptions and recordings will be purged after 180 days. Teams channels are not affected. If information in your chat(s) is important and will need to be referenced in the future, consider moving it to a Teams channel, a Word document, or saving in OneDrive. Files shared with you in Teams chats will remain in your OneDrive. You will see broad messaging about these changes starting in July 2026 so everyone has time to prepare. We recognize that many people use Teams chats as informal historical records and that this change will require adjusting work habits going forward.
