A new and more flexible course management system, Canvas, is now serving Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, and students. Our configuration of Blackboard Learn, the University’s primary learning management system (LMS) for the last decade, is no longer supported by the vendor and retired at JHU.

The University selected Instructure Canvas as a replacement after a comprehensive evaluation process. Thousands of faculty, staff, and students shared their feedback along with an in-depth review by IT@JH, Student Disabilities Services (SDS), and the divisions’ teaching and learning centers.

A select group of early adopters ran courses on Canvas in spring 2022, and faculty and student feedback helped customized the system. By fall 2022, Canvas had nearly 10,000 courses running successfully.  Effective December 1, 2022, Blackboard is no longer available to users, and all university courses are housed on Canvas except School of Public Health courses, which will continue to use CoursePlus.
