The Johns Hopkins inHealth Research Enclave for Analyzing Clinical Health Data (REACH) is a de-identified data resource that enables scientific discovery and advances healthcare by developing a de-identified version of Johns Hopkins’ electronic medical records (EMR) data. Health IT, inHealth Precision Medicine, Research IT, and School of Medicine leadership collaborated on this effort.
REACH includes data from more than 8 million patients, 1 billion structured data points, and 190 million clinical notes. Following an initial test pilot, REACH is in its second pilot phase with access now open across the School of Medicine.
REACH offers a streamlined access portal on a dedicated SharePoint site maintained by Research IT. Faculty can request de-identified clinical data through the portal, complete abrief training and an electronic attestation, and be routed to the appropriate compliance path.
By simplifying access to high-quality clinical data, REACH aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research, boost funding competitiveness, support trainee education, and shorten the time from insight to clinical impact. Response to REACH has been overwhelmingly positive. One SOM researcher said, “The timeline for responding to proposals has been astounding — feedback has been same-day and very helpful. Approval for my project was approximately 24 hours. Our team is very grateful for the support!”
The initial release includes structured and unstructured data, but radiology data, pathology data, and more modalities will follow. Access will open broadly across Johns Hopkins in the next few months.
