Infusion pumps are medical devices that deliver fluids or medications into a patient’s circulatory system. Epic’s infusion pump integration is a system that connects infusion pumps with Epic. This integration allows for a bi-directional flow of data between the pumps and the electronic health record (EHR). This project aims to harmonize medication infusions by developing shared infusion medication records, including standardizing concentrations, dosing, and other key parameters to ensure consistency across the health system. The integration recently and successfully went live at All Children’s Hospital (ACH).

The benefits of integration include:

  • Automatic programming: Orders entered in Epic can automatically program the infusion pumps, reducing the need for manual entry and minimizing errors.
  • Real-time data transfer: Changes made at the pump are sent directly to the patient’s record in Epic, ensuring accurate and up-to-date documentation.
  • Improved workflow: Nurses’ workflow is streamlined, allowing them to spend more time with patients and less time on administrative tasks.
  • Enhanced safety: Automating the programming and documentation processes helps prevent medication errors and improves patient safety.

The Health IT team worked closely with ACH clinical leadership to implement this integration. Integrations at the remaining community hospitals are planned over the next several months.
